The PTI is considering legal options, including approaching the Supreme Court, to prevent the appointment of the new army chief by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
A senior party leader told The News, however, when contacted, Fawad Chaudhry denied this and said he was not aware such a move was being considered.
According to a senior PTI leader, the party does not want the ruling alliance led by Shehbaz Sharif to appoint the army chief at the end of November.
He said that, as Imran Khan has already said in a TV interview, the question of appointing the head of the army should be postponed until the arrival of the new government.
However, when Fawad Chaudhry was asked if the PTI was considering contacting the Supreme Court to prevent Shehbaz Sharif’s appointment of the army chief in November, he replied that he had no such information.
When asked that Imran Khan had referred the matter to his party’s legal experts to prevent the appointment of the army chief, Fawad replied in the negative. He said that Non-League leader and Federal Minister Khurram Dastgir had made a statement that Nawaz Sharif would be consulted for the appointment of the Army Chief; It was discussed at the party. He said that in the context of Dastgir’s statement, PTI leaders gave statements on the matter. At his recent meeting, Imran Khan said several times that the government cannot have the authority to name the head of the army.
In an interview given to private TV, he said that it is the job of the jurists to see how this issue can be dealt with at a legal level, but the issue of appointing a new head of the army must be postponed until the next elections and the coming of a new government. He also said that the newly elected government must appoint the head of the army.
A few weeks ago, Imran Khan had no problem with the current government naming the head of the army. In a TV interview, he said that the opposition has nothing to do with such an appointment, as this is the job of the prime minister and government at the time.
It is not understood why Imran Khan changed his mind about this appointment and made it part of his new political agenda.
On the other hand, the government is determined to fulfill its constitutional responsibility. Defense Minister Khawaja Asif says Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif will appoint the army chief in November.
Although Imran Khan wants to delay the appointment, it appears that the current head of the army, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, does not want to work after November 2022. Legally speaking, the power of appointment rests with the prime minister. There is no legal option for indefinite delay in appointment.
