Saint Kitts and Nevis elects new leader in early electionsOUS News

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) – St. Kitts and Nevis, the eastern Caribbean nation, has elected a new prime minister after holding early elections three years ahead of schedule.

Dr. Terrence Drew of the Labor Party of St. Kitts Nevis ousted Prime Minister Timothy Harris of the People’s Labor Party, according to preliminary election results released Saturday.

Harris first became Prime Minister in February 2015 and was re-elected to a second term after the three-party alliance Team Unity won nine of 11 seats in Parliament in the 2020 elections. But Harris lost a vote of no confidence cast by his coalition partners earlier this year, prompting the sister island nation to hold a general election on Friday.

The six political parties nominated a total of more than 30 candidates running for 11 of the 15 seats in parliament. Drew’s party won six seats and Harris’ party won one. The governor-general of the island will appoint people to the remaining four seats after the election.

Drew’s party promised better health care, affordable housing, and greater access to education. Harris’s party has pledged, among other things, to build a stronger economy, create more jobs, and further reduce poverty.
