Adam Mosseri, the CEO of Instagram, announced that the social media platform will test ultra-high 9:16 photographs “in a week or two”. Mosseri wants to complement big Instagram videos with his big images.

Instagram requires images to be cropped to a 4:5 aspect ratio to post, but adding 9:16 photos will make it easier to fit taller, thinner images that completely fill the phone screen . Photographers have slammed the social media app for destroying their work when it tried to mimic a TikTok-style design with a 9:16 display frame.

Mosseri has repeatedly acknowledged that the full-screen photo experience isn’t optimal when using the app’s testing features.

The company wants to promote the experience of taking very high photos without requiring them everywhere.

According to the company’s analytics, users are less likely to like Instagram’s new look and therefore use the app less.
