Guwahati. In Nagaland, all parties, including the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Janata Dal-United (JDU), declared their support for the Neiphiu Rio government, with which the party also became the opposition minority. Let us tell you that the NDPP and the BJP contested the state elections last month in alliance and won 25 and 12 seats respectively in the 60-member assembly. Neiphiu Rio was sworn in as chief minister for the fifth term on Tuesday, including seven ministers from NDPP and five from BJP. Other political parties including NCP won seven seats; National People’s Party (NPP) five; Lok Janshakti Party (LJP-Ram Vilas), Naga People’s Front (NPF) and Republican Party of India (RPI-Athawale) have two seats each, Janata Dal-United (JD-U) one and Independent have four seats.
This is the first time that Nagaland has seen the victory of multiple political parties in the state assembly elections. LJP (RV) and RPI (Athawale) are new to state politics. The NCP is the largest opposition party with seven seats and has enough numbers to claim the position of President of the Opposition. However, while Narendra Verma’s party’s Northeast wing visited Nagaland this week, the party’s MPs told him that they want to join the government. Verma announced on Wednesday that party president Sharad Pawar has decided to extend his support to the NDPP-BJP government.
The NCP also joined the government in Nagaland
Opposing any mention of BJP, Verma issued a statement, “The newly elected MLA of the district and the NCP constituency in Nagaland is of the opinion that we should be part of the government by N. Going to Rio. Head of NDPP and in the great interest of Nagaland State, Chief Minister of Nagaland and N. A have good relations with Rio. It is left to Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar to be a part of Nagaland government or not. On Tuesday morning, after listening to the Northeast in charge, he, in the great interest of the state of Nagaland, the Chief Minister of Nagaland N. has decided to take the leadership of Rio…’
LJP (Ram Vilas), RPI (Athawale) and JD (U) submitted letters of support
The NCP is one of the biggest opponents of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Maharashtra and other parts of the country. But, in Nagaland the party has put its full force behind the NDPP-BJP government. With this, Nagaland is heading towards another opposition government. Sources said that LJP (Ram Vilas), RPI (Athawale) and JD(U) have already submitted letters of support to the alliance partners. Likewise, NPF secretary general Achumbemo Kikon, who is one of the new parliamentarians, said that although the final decision has not been made, the party, which has two members, ‘is likely to support the government.’ In the past, in 2015 and 2021, the House of Council has seen such things, but this will be the first time that the assembly will not have opposition even before they are sworn in.
